So today I was having a discussion with a friend that I tried to explain was not really something you should talk about over an Instant Message, since you can't tell someones tone of voice, or meaning behind the words but he insisted so I had the conversation anyways. Lets see... last time I checked I had the right to have my own opinions about religion, am I right?? OK so I made a joke about being a 'good boy' in the Church, this is the reaction I got back..
"so only good people are in the church, and so everyone else is bad? you Mormons"
um... oh you thought I meant you aren't a good boy because you don't go to church, No actually that was a joke, hence the sarcasm and the reason I didn't want to have this conversation on IM after I explained this to him he came back with
" i am more spiritual than most Mormons i know
i pray, meditate, and do charity work far beyond 99% of Mormons i know
sorry i don't mean to harp on you, i just though you were much better and more intelligent than to make rash generalizations and assumptions about the "gentiles" "
I was so frustrated that he would not even try to think that maybe I really wasn't trying to judge him and I simply made a joke that I finally apologized that I was sorry that he took my joke as a judgement but I didn't mean to offend him by it. And then I got off line. Well I guess I'm just the same as the rest of the damn Mormons going around judging every one and hating on people cus they don't believe the same things I do. Hmm... but I think by his comment of "you Mormons" would make him the one making judgements and not me... am I right??
there is my vent session for the day... coming later the cute little centipede that I found at work today :)

Religion is definitely a hard thing to talk about anyways. :( It really shouldn't be, but it's so huge that it's hard for anyone to really understand it completely. And are we really suppose to? Isn't that a part of faith?
ReplyDeleteI think that a lot of people get caught up in, "I'm a Baptist!" "I'm a Catholic!" "Well, I'm Mormon!" and all of that. Is your religious denomination what REALLY matters? We all have a stereotypical view of other denominations. I'm just as guilty as anyone as doing it. When someone does something I've said, "Well . . . they ARE Cathlolic . . . " or "Oh, those silly Pentecostals." or something like that. When, really, it doesn't matter what they "are."
One time at work, people were talking about something that had to do with being Catholic. I had no idea what they were talking about, since I'm not. And one guy asked me what I was. "Baptist." and he said, "Welp, we know of one person in the office that's going to hell." I knew he was joking. And I took no offense to it what-so-ever. But I know about 95% of everyone would have, lol.
When we get into discussions about religion, I don't think we should ever bring up the church we got to, lol. First, we just need to talk. And I bet that our views aren't that much different. Ya know?
I don't really know if that had anything to do with what you wrote after I got started, lol. But it's my two cents. :p
Oh, P.S. people that are religious can't make jokes. lol. I've come to realize that. It's like once you are a Christian of any sort, you're all of a sudden not human and don't have a sense of humor. Or something.
(P.S.S. I follow your photography blog, that's how I came across your persona. So don't think I'm a creeper. :p)
Thanks for sharing! It really is a hard topic and not something I think should be talked about over an instant message. I am learning about the 'can't have a sense of humor' thing lol its SO true!! Oh and I don't think your a creeper I think your hilarious!
ReplyDeleteI am sorry you had that! I hate it when people don't really know you and can't really understand that you are joking around. It's very frustrating!!!
ReplyDeleteI think we should be able to say what we want and joke around if we feel like it. If people want to take offense to things that we have said that is not our problem! You can't make anyone feel something that they don't choose to feel themselves (if that makes sense).
It is not us 'damn Mormons' that are judgmental it is everybody. However, we are held to a higher standard then everyone else because we are taught NOT to be that way. (Something that my husband and I fight a lot about because he thinks that it's just the Mormons that are judgmental) It's super frustrating when people don't look at the bigger picture and they only see what they want to see.
Anywho...that is my griping session. I was going to say something light hearted and then just kinda went into it. I apologize! LOL I love you and I think you should not stop cracking jokes just because someone is so uncomfortable with themselves that they can't take a joke!!! :)
